Summer Plans for Dance!

Hey guys! How are you all doing? With school coming to a close soon, summer is just around the corner! I am super excited for this summer. I'll be doing a 5 day, 2.5 hour per day ballet/pointe intensive in June. I did one of these last year too, when I first got my pointes. It was set up like a regular 90 minute class on flat, and then an hour of pointe. I don't know if it will be the same this year, but hopefully it will be! I'll also be attending open classes, probably once a week, in addition to that.

Also, drumroll please, I decided to try out lyrical. Anyone who's been reading for a while knows I used to attend another competition studio, and I miss it sooooo much. The girls were awesome and the teacher was so much fun. It was much more of a family atmosphere, and I miss them! So I'll be taking a lyrical class once a week there, and maybe even continue it and take it next year as well!

What are you guys doing this summer?

  1. That sounds awesome!

I'll be... *dun dun dun* taking my first ever ballet class at a summer program! I'm really excited. Do you have any tips as to what I should work on before I go? I'm trying to get into better shape but I don't know what else to do besides flexibility.

    1. Is this your first ballet class ever, or your first summer program? Either way, congrats!

Just work the basics, like flexibility, cardio (for stamina), and work on your core (sit-ups, crunches, planks, pilates).

You'll learn the technique at the class, that's why you're going! So don't worry about that!

    2. Thank you so much! I have been working on flexibility, but I didn't think about the others! I run a little, but I've heard that it's bad for dancers. Is that a big enough reason to stop?

It's my first ballet class ever! :P I've been following this blog since December, and I'm so excited to be able to relate!

    3. That's so exciting! I get so happy when other people are happy to start ballet, as weird as that is. Running isn't the best for professional dancers, but it won't make a difference if you're only taking a few classes a week.

The biggest worry with ballet dancers running is that they tend to run with their feet turned out, which is super bad for your joints, so as long as you keep your turnout in ballet class, you'll be fine.

  2. I'm going to be participating in my first ever summer intensive! I'm so excited! It's just a small week long one at my studio, it only lasts from 9 to 2:30 but I still feel really proud of myself because I've only been back to ballet for a year and yet I get to participate in the "Honors" intensive. I,ll be doing that along with my weekly ballet class and I'm thinking about trying an acro, contemporary or lyrical class If I can. I'm looking forward to a summer FULL of dancing!

  4. Cool!
I will be attending a ballet intensive (not telling which one for safety reasons) For 2 weeks from 8 a.m. to... I think 2 p.m. I attended this one too last year. I was going to go to an overnight three week dance camp, but not anymore... and anyway, its really far away from where I live.
I will also be taking classes and a short evening intensive at my studio, and possibly another intensive at a studio 15 mins down the road.

BTW I loooooove your blog! Even though Im not a teen beginner... Oh well. I still love it :) And I would love to earn you money so If I see something I like in the little ad box I will be sure to click!

  5. I'm... starting dance again this summer! And I couldn't be more excited. <3

Now that my family can afford dance lessons again (I'll be taking two ballet classes- 45 minutes each, I think, over the summer to get back into the swing of things and make sure I really want to make the commitment again), I've talked it over with my parents- telling them that I'm willing to help out in whatever way I can financially and really, really want to start dancing again, even if I am too old to go professional now. I just miss the feeling and the flexibility (of which mine is all but gone...) and how much I loved it when I was younger.

I've been stretching for a few weeks now and can touch my toes with straight knees again (along with being the closest to a center split that I've ever been!), so that's a start, right? c:

Hopefully, with practice, it will feel like I never stopped. I can't wait for classes to start soon!~

Thanks for running this lovely blog to keep me on my toes and hopeful. :)

    1. Don't be discouraged by weight. Some of the girls are stick thin, but many of the ballet dancers at my studio, even the girls in the company, are curvy! Some of the best dancers I know aren't tiny but they know how to use their bodies to tell a story, and that's what it's all about!

  7. would i still learn and be flexible if i start lessons from 14 years old? is it too late?

    1. It is not too late, I started ballet at 14. If you take classes and stretch often then you'll pick it up too! I was actually surprised at how quickly I gained flexibility, I went from not being able to touch my toes, to putting my palms flat on the ground in three or four weeks.
