Variations!

Thursday I learned my first variation! It's the Giselle variation from Act 1. We started with a 90 minute ballet class, and then did 30 minutes of variations. We did most of barre and all of center en pointe, and due to my dead shoes, I was pretty burned out by the time we started the variation. We did the actual variation in flat shoes though, because otherwise we would be doing hops on pointe (which are preeetty hard). Hopefully I'll be able to get fitted for gaynors this weekend, but I'll have to take a bit of a trip to get to the store that properly fits them.

  1. Hello! I have been an avid reader since July and am finally making a comment! :)
I am a 14 year old girl that has been doing ballet for about 4 months, and I REALLY like it! Possibley even love it! However since I am a late starter, like you, I would really like to improve, and hopefully catch up in ballet. I currently dance twice a week(which is not as bad as some teen/adult beginner/intd. classes, I know) at a good quality, very reputable, and almost pre-pro, recreational studio for 75 minutes, each. I would like to take ballet more often, but that is the max. for that class. My question is, if I should seek out other good quality studios(there are a couple more, locally) to take more class, or ask my current studio for other dancing options, such as with younger children. Money is a slight problem, but I have ways of earning money myself and would be willing to save and wait for buying unnecessary items (such as clothes, I'm somewhat of a shopaholic :) for ballet. Any thoughts? There's nothing wrong with my current studio, but I am somewhat serious about ballet and would really like to take more to improve, especially because I have no other dance- or dance related- experience. P.S. You are also an amazing inspiration to me! The fact that you started at 14, same age as me, makes me so happy! Thank you for making this blog :)

    1. Hey Victoria! Thanks so much for sticking around since July! Both the options you laid out, either finding a new studio or taking more classes at your current studio, sound like good options. Really think about what you want to do! If there is a "better" school for ballet in your area that is affordable, check it out! Talk to the teachers, explain your situation, and maybe take a class or two! If not, asking your current studio for more classes is a great idea. There is nothing wrong with going down a level or two and taking classes with younger girls. Sure they may be young, but working on the basics can really help make you a stronger dancer. You could also check into other forms of dance at your studio, maybe try out something a little similar like modern or jazz.

I'd just like to throw in here that I'm not a professional and am not on a professional dancing track. I love ballet and it is definitely my passion, but I don't have the resources or skill to dance professionally.

    1. I like it, keep posting! You get to dance at school? That's pretty neat! Is it like a school for the arts?
