First Class of the Season!

Hey everyone! I just got back from my first class at the  academy this season. It was 6:30-8:30, so I'm pretty tuckered out. We had a different teacher today, the owner of the academy actually taught my class. It was a little different because of that, and it seemed like I hadn't taken a class in forever! It took me a while to warm back up to ballet. There were 5 other girls in my class, around 11-13. Only I and one other girl were on pointe, the rest were demi-pointe. We did a normal 90 minute class and 30 minutes or so of pointe exercises and strenthening. About 10 minutes to the end of class while I was doing grand jetes across the floor, I heard a "snap" and looked down at my pointe shoe to see one of the ribbons had come unattached to the shoe! I finished the jetes very poorly and went over to untie my pointe shoes and had to finish the class in flats.

Overall, it was a good class and I'm glad to be back to ballet! Anything cool/fun/interesting/weird happen in your first class or first class of the season? Tell me in the comments!

  1. Glad to see you are back to blogging! My first ballet class since I was 10 (not counting summer classes) was Tuesday. Mine starts at 8pm so it runs really late. It was a great first class. My goal is to work my butt of so I can go on pointe by or before my senior year (I'm a sophomore this year). Do you have any tips? By the way, I love your blog. Its a big help/inspiration for me!

    1. Hey, that's awesome about your first class! 8 is so late though, I'd be falling asleep! It may be possible to start pointe your senior year, it's different for everyone. My tips would be to take 3 or more ballet classes a week and do as much strengthening as you can. Using a theraband, and/or doing yoga, pilates, or swimming can help with strengthening and flexibility.

Thank you so much, it's always the best when the blog inspires others. That comment made my day!

  2. Hiya, just wondered what brand does the best leotard and what do the sizes 00, 0,3,5 etc equate to in English sizes?

    1. The brand depends on what styles you like and your price range. My personal favorite is Capezio leotards (secifically this one http://www.discountdance.com/dancewear/style_BX110.html?&pid=7520&Shop=Style&&skey=bratek&search=true&SID=379595774 ) because they last long, are comfortable, and aren't too expensive. For someone who likes a little more of a funky look, brands like Natalie offer a number of creative leotard designs. If you have a bigger price range, you may want to check out brands like Yumiko.

I believe to change from English sizes to American sizes, you subtract 30. So a size 2 in America would be a size 32 in Europe, and a size 36 in Europe would be an American 6.

I hope that answers your question!

  4. Hi, have you considered taking some classes above your level as well as your level? At my school, my teacher allows us to do that for no extra cost, so that could be something to think about! Taking a class a level above is beneficial because it provides a challenge and prepares you for when you are actually get up to that level, because you already have a working knowledge of the work!! Ask your teacher about it, because it sounds like you could do with a challenge (and more classwork, I know how frusterating it is when you can't take anymore classes because of lack of funds or your school doesn't offer it)

    1. That's a great idea! However, at my studio, students are only allowed to take classes outside their level to make up missed classes, and when they do that it has to be a level below theirs. The lack of funds is really frustrating, but I'll just have to deal with it for now.
